FAQs
- How do you commission writers?
-
Usually the Artistic Director will see a play or have read a script that is of interest and we want to explore further.
The Artistic Director and writer then meet and take it from there. Sometimes the writer will contact the director to see a show that is on, and sometimes it is the writer’s agent.
- Do you accept unsolicited scripts?
-
Sphinx is currently unable to accept unsolicited scripts.
- Do you only work with women?
-
No, we work with men and women.
Men are included in the creative/acting teams, but not generally as a writer or director.
The important and central factor must be an understanding and empathy with the company’s aims, which is to focus on creating theatre pieces that include a wider range of female characters.
- How do you create your work?
-
Through workshops, collaboration, improvisation and text. Movement, sound and dance have always played an important part in Sphinx productions.
- Where do you rehearse and how often?
-
We hire rehearsal space in London for each production.
Rehearsals for our tours are usually for 4 weeks. We rehearse when we are creating new work and also to workshop ideas for future productions.
- I am an actor, keen to work with Sphinx, how should I approach you?
-
There are different approaches that we take to casting, depending on the roles to be filled.
We try and see as much work as possible throughout the year, and will approach someone directly or via their agent if they are ideal for a particular role.
We also work with casting directors, advertise in The Stage, SBS, PCR and talk to other companies. CVs and headshots can be sent to the Administrator for file, although responding to casting breakdowns is our preferred route.
Please note that Sphinx is not currently casting.
